Chapter 25

Brother

As my sister drives away from the bar, I continuously look in the side mirror to ensure there’s no red truck behind us.

Thankfully, Jake or Lenny isn’t following us tonight.

Thankfully, my sister had the common sense to get out of that bar and away from my so-called friends.

The thought of what they did to my sister just now infuriates me. They could easily kick my ass, but had I been alive and they pulled that crap with Sarah, it would be worth getting beat up over.

How could they talk to her that way?

I always knew they were not great people, but we called ourselves friends. As tough as they were, when the drugs and alcohol kicked in, they could be vulnerable, like me. They’d tell me their problems and I’d share mine.

I considered them like brothers at one time.

To think that's how they were with my sister makes me wonder how much I really knew either of them. It’s almost like I knew none of the people I thought were important in my life.

Jake, Lenny and Jenn. Now that I’m dead and have a clear mind, I don’t understand what I saw in any of them.

A beam of light from a vehicle behind us makes me tense up. When I look back, I see a small car and feel immediate relief.

“Please tell me we're going home, sis,” I tell Sarah. As we drive down John’s street, my tension eases.

We walk into John’s house and he’s on the couch, alone, watching television. He stands up to greet Sarah.

“Hey, I was wondering if you were going to come back tonight,” he says.

“Yeah,” Sarah answers, “I was out longer than I expected. Alice and Melanie are asleep already?”

He raises his eyebrows. “Yes, and I got the impression that I should take my time coming to bed tonight.” He lets out a laugh. “I should have told Alice about paying for the funeral. It was dumb of me to keep that secret.”

“I’m sorry I mentioned it,” Sarah says. “I didn’t know. I didn’t even think about payment for a funeral. My head’s been spinning since finding out about Mickey.”

John shakes his head. “Not your fault, at all. It’s mine.”

“Why did you pay for his funeral?” Sarah asks.

John’s mouth lowers and if anyone could see me, I’m sure I wouldn’t be able to hide my expression at her direct question either. I have to admit, I'm just as curious.

“Well,” he says, trying to find the words. “I don't know. It felt right, I suppose. I mean, I lived in that house with your mother, you and Michael for such a long time… It just felt right. I know you probably wouldn’t have money to help since you’re in school.”

Sarah face lightens as he explains. “I know he owes you a bunch of money as well.”

John smiles. “Yeah, he did.”

“I want to pay you back. I’m planning on selling the house and after that, I want to pay you back for everything he owed, plus the funeral costs.
